Description

Map showing the Florida Transit & Peninsular Railroad and its connections.

The main map concentrates on Florida, its cities and towns, with railroad network and current land grant in the central portion of the state. The large inset map shows the railroad's connections to other gulf coast states. Detailed maps were published in 1882 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co.

The Florida Transit Company was the name given to the Florida railroad system in 1882 by the new purchaser, politician and railroad magnate, Sir Edward James Reed. In 1883, Reed reorganized the company as the Florida Transit and Peninsular Railroad with proposed connections to Ocala and Tampa. In 1884, he merged his railroad with the Florida Central & Western Railroad, the Leesburg & Indian River Railroad and the Fernandina & Jacksonville Railroads to become the popular Florida Railway & Navigation Co. which would later become the Florida Central & Peninsular Railroad Company.

A system chart on the map lists the railroad’s 494 miles of operational lines, as well as its 713 miles of extensions already commenced. The Florida Transit Company owned a line of passenger and freight steamers at the time, which ran daily between Fernandina and Savannah. The chart lists the company’s steamship lines and connections.
