Description

Panoramic view of Quitman, Ga. county-seat of Brooks-County 1885. Beck & Pauli, lith.

Panoramic map of Quitman, Georgia, published in 1885. Incorporated as a town in 1859, Quitman was made county seat of newly formed Brooks County just five years before the start of the American Civil War. Brooks County presented three regiments for the Confederacy: the 9th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, Company H, Brooks County Rifles or Brooks Rifles; the 26th Regiment, Georgia Infantry (Styles/Lamar), Company I, Piscola Volunteers; and the 50th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, Company K, Brooks Volunteers. Known as the "Breadbasket of the South", Brooks County was the main producer of food for the Confederacy. This map captures the city as it appeared twenty years after the Civil War.

The "Atlanta Constitution" newspaper commented on Quitman's prosperity in its January 25, 1871 issue:

"Quitman is prosperous. In the last ninety days real estate there has advanced in price twenty per cent and several new buildings are in course of erection."
