Description

View of Iowa City, Johnson County, I.A., 1868 / drawn & published by A. Ruger.

This bird’s-eye view print of Iowa City, Iowa was drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Chicago Lith. Co. in 1868. Iowa City was designated as the state capital in 1839 along the Iowa River. When the announcement of a planned town surrounding the capital was out, many speculators and settlers arrived, making it necessary for the town to grow rapidly.

Iowa City remained the capital from 1841, when proper government buildings were completed, until 1857, when the capital was removed to Des Moines.

In 1860 the Iowa State Fair was held in Iowa City at the newly established Johnson County Fair Grounds. An estimated 10,000 visitors attended. Iowa City has been the home of the University of Iowa research institution since 1847.
