Description

Map of Iowa exhibiting the townships, cities, villages, post offices, railroads, common roads & other improvements, published by E. Mendenhall in 1855.

This map displays Iowa in the years after becoming the 29th state, when settlers were arriving from all parts. As a result of the signing of the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux, Iowa lands were now available for farming.

Much building of railroads was occurring during this time. Iowa thrived as an agricultural state, and as a major west-bound conduit, due to its many railroads.

The colorful map shows counties, rivers, cities, towns and post offices. Completed, under construction, and proposed railways are indicated.
