Description

View of Chicago, Cook County, I.L., 1892 / drawn & published by Currier & Ives.

This colorful print of Chicago, Illinois was drawn and published by Currier & Ives in 1892. Chicago was the place to be in 1892 as the city readied for the great World’s Columbian Exposition. Tailored to celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the “new world”, the exhibition promised and delivered a new age to Chicagoans with its overall design and international interest.

Its grand buildings of Beaux-Arts designed principles graced handsome fairgrounds to create the illusion of European grandeur. Buildings and exhibits were illuminated by Nikola Tesla’s invented high-frequency lighting. Although marred two days before the fair’s ending by the assassination of Chicago’s mayor Carter Harrison, Sr., the exposition, visited by millions, was a successful event for Chicago and many prospered from it.

The map published in 1892 includes streets, buildings and bridges. It portrays port activity and railroad routes; and features border references to the following:
