Description

View of Chicago, Cook County, I.L., 1870's / drawn & published by W. Flint.

This colorful illustrated print of Chicago, Illinois was drawn and published by W. Flint in 1871. In the years following the Great Fire of 1871, there was great nostalgia for the city that Chicago had once been.

The disaster, which killed around 300, destroyed much of the core of the city and left over 100,000 homeless. Many considered the city to be un-inhabitable during these years of re-construction and re-located to nearby towns. Chicago was quick to rebuild following the fire.

The illustration published in 1871 includes streets, buildings, railroad lines, piers and shipping vessels.
