This bird’s-eye view print of Moline, Illinois was drawn by Henry Wellge and published by American Publishing Co. in 1889. The industrious town of Moline began as soon as water power was generated at that location along the Mississippi River.
This new power source afforded several manufacturing interests to settle here including John Deere & Company. In the 1840's Mr. Deere relocated his steel plow works from Grand Detour to Moline. The company soon branched into other agricultural implement manufactures to become a leading employer of the area.
In the 1880s a valuable streetcar system was installed connecting the communities of Moline and Rock Island with Davenport, Iowa.
Moline is pictured here ten years before the founding of Western Illinois University.
The map includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes. Rock Island is shown in the foreground. There are featured inset illustrations of the Deere & Co. Moline Plow Works, Moline Plow Co. and Deere & Mansur Co. Corn Planter Works.
