Description

Cram's Township and Railroad Map of Indiana.

This indexed township and county map was created and published in 1888 by George F. Cram & Co. Railroads are distinquished by color.

Indiana had become an important swing state politically during the 1880's. Indianapolis’ popular civil war colonel, and grandson of W.H. Harrison, was elected president of the United States in 1888, defeating the incumbent President Cleveland.

The newest state capitol building was completed in 1888. The building took eight years to build, but still stands today, as Indiana’s Statehouse. This new building promised a stronger foundation than the last one, which had been condemned, and would consist of Indiana state resources whenever possible. Locally grown and milled oak was brought in for use in making doors and other interior trim, limestone quarried in Owens County was used throughout, and the forward thinking architects even had the building wired for electricity without a current power grid in place. The structure stands directly where earlier settlers traveled along the country’s National Road. It was designed by Indianapolis architect Edwin May and supervised, after his death, by Adolph Sherrer.
