This bird’s-eye view print of Paducah, Kentucky was drawn by J. Blanton Postlethwaite and published by Krebs Lith. Co. in 1889. Paducah was established in 1830 by explorer William Clark at the confluence of the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers.
Sulfuric springs scattered throughout the highly forested area brought many to the community in need of the hydrotherapeutic benefits.
“Cement Rock” was harvested in the region and used for building purposes such as underpinning and well support. Paducah maintained dry dock and shipyard facilities for steamboats and barges, and was a major railroad hub. The transportation facilities were of great importance to Union forces during the American Civil War.
