Reproduction map of New Orleans, Louisiana and vicinity published in 1863. Named for the Duke of Orleans, the city of New Orleans was founded in 1718 by the French-owned "Company of the West". Control of the city remained in French hands until it was ceded to Spain in 1763. The French regained control again in 1801, but was sold by Napoleon to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

The city had been part of the United States for sixty years when this map was published.
