This panoramic view of Baltimore, Maryland, looking south, with Washington Monument in the foreground, was drawn and published by A. Sachse & Co. in 1880. Baltimore was established in the early 1700's as a shipping port for the tobacco trade. It was the site of a number of important battles during the War of 1812, including the invasion at Fort McHenry, which inspired lawyer Francis Scott Key to pen the poem that would later become the national anthem.
The many war, and other monuments, gave John Quincy Adams cause to call Baltimore “The Monumental City”, which became its nickname. The Washington Monument was completed in 1829. The structure, designed by Robert Mills, was constructed using marble supplied by nearby Cockeysville. It was comprised of a museum with a 178 foot Doric column on top, which held an observation deck that was crowned with a standing statue of General Washington. An iron fence surrounding the monument was added in 1838. Mills would later design the monument at Washington DC.
