Description

Bird's eye view of the city of Portland, Maine 1876. Jos. Warner, artist,  Chicago Litho'g. Co.

The region's first permanent European settlement was in 1633, then a fishing village named Casco.  The town's name was changed to Falmouth when the Massachusett's Bay Colony took over Casco Bay in 1658.  The village was destroyed during King Philip's War, a conflict with the Wampanoag tribe.  The town of Falmouth was burned by the Royal Navy during the American Revolution.  Following the war, the section called The Neck was developed as a commercial port and renamed Portland, after the English isle.  Portland was the capital of Maine from 1820 to 1832, when the capital was moved to Augusta.

Portland was the site of one of the northernmost battles of the Civil War, when a confederate raiding party entered the harbor, resulting in the "Battle of Portland Harbor".

This map captures the town as it appeared just ten years after the 1866 Great Fire of Portland, Maine, which started during an Independence Day celebration, destroying most of the commercial buildings and hundreds of homes.
