View of Austin, Mower County, M.N., 1870 / drawn & published by A. Ruger.

This panoramic print of Austin, Minnesota was drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Ruger and Stoner in 1870. Austin was established in the 1850's along the banks of the Red Cedar River. The dark rich soil well afforded the growing of various cereal grains and grasses.

In 1855, when Mower County was designated, Austin was named its seat of government. In 1870, Austin was served by the Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad.

Primarily an agricultural community, Austin also housed valuable lumber mills operated by the Engle family, the Warners and others.

The map, looking north east, includes labeled streets, buildings, bridges and railroad route. There is an inset illustration of the Public School.
