This bird’s-eye view print of Hastings, Minnesota was drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Chicago Lithographing Co. in 1867. Hastings was established in the 1850's at a narrow point of the Mississippi River near the mouth of the Vermillion River. The town southeast of St. Paul was named county seat of Dakota County in 1858 as the state of Minnesota was forming.

Hastings incorporated good railroad and steamboat service, and relied heavily in its early years on the timber industry and mining interests.

The map includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes. Steamship and barge activity is displayed in the foreground including featured steamer “Itasca”.
