Description

View of St. Paul, Ramsey County, M.N., 1883 / drawn & published by H. Wellge.

This bird’s-eye view print of St. Paul, Minnesota was drawn by Henry Wellge and published by J. J. Stoner, Beck & Pauli Lith Co. in 1883. St. Paul was established in the 1800's along the banks of the Mississippi River near where Fort Snelling stood as an early safe haven for settlers heading west. When the Minnesota Territory was formed in 1849 St. Paul was designated as its capital.

Wheat was grown and harvested abundantly in the region, with processing and transport of the grain done through St. Paul. As Minnesota was made the thirty-second state in 1858, St. Paul quickly grew with the addition of manufacturing opportunities and railroad facilities moving in. West St. Paul, just across the river was annexed in 1874.

The map includes labeled streets, buildings, bridges and railroad route. Riverboat activity is displayed in the foreground and the lakes of Como and Phalen are shown in the distance. A population of 75,000 is noted. There are border illustrations drawn by H. Brosius of the following:
