Description

View of St. Paul, Ramsey County, M.N., 1893 / drawn & published by Brown, Treacy & Co.

This panoramic print of St. Paul, Minnesota was drawn and published by Brown, Treacy & Co. in 1893. St. Paul was established in the 1800's along the banks of the Mississippi River near where Fort Snelling once stood as an early safe haven for settlers traveling west. When the Minnesota Territory was formed in 1849 St. Paul was designated as its capital.

Wheat was grown and harvested abundantly in the region, with processing and transport of the grain done through St. Paul. As Minnesota was made the thirty-second state in 1858, St. Paul quickly grew with the addition of manufacturing opportunities and railroad facilities moving in.

West St. Paul, just across the river was annexed in 1874. Iron ore began to be mined in the hills around town in the 1880's, and St. Paul’s business section enjoyed newly graded streets, ample board sidewalks and a new sewer system.

The bird’s-eye view, looking west from Dayton’s Bluff, includes streets, buildings, bridges and railroad routes. Riverboat activity is displayed along the Mississippi.
