This perspective print of Winona, Minnesota was drawn and published by C. J. Pauli & Co. in 1889. Winona, situated along the Mississippi River, is the county seat of Winona County. In 1858, the first normal school, west of the Mississippi, was founded at Winona. The school is now known as Winona State University.
Winona prospered in its early years with the harvesting timber, and raising and processing of wheat. Due to the city’s easy river access and good railroad connections, Winona was able to boom as a major grain shipping port.
The illustration includes labeled streets, buildings, railroad route and vicinity. Riverboat and barge activity is portrayed in the foreground. Lake Winona is shown in the distance. Buildings, mills and wheat warehouses are numbered, but no reference list is included.
