Description

View of Norfolk, Madison County, N.E., 1889 / drawn & published by H. Wellge.

This bird’s-eye view perspective print of Norfolk, Nebraska was drawn by Henry Wellge and published by American Publishing Co. in 1889. Norfolk was settled following the Homestead Act of 1862. The agricultural possibilities looked prosperous in this region along the North Fork of Elkhorn River. In the 1870's the railroads reached Norfolk and that, paired with the discovery of gold in the Black Hills of South Dakota, brought much trade to Norfolk. Norfolk was directly linked by rail with the mining interests. Provisions and supplies could be purchased in Norfolk, giving it great importance in trade and business.

Norfolk developed a street railway system in 1887 as well as a pure water supply.

The map includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes. There are featured inset illustrations of the following:

• Norfolk Continuation South of Grove Ave.
• Elkhorn Valley Investment Co. Addition to Norfolk. Continuation to the left on Norfolk Ave.
• Norfolk in 1884.
