This reproduction bird's-eye view map of Asbury Park, New Jersey was published by T. M. Fowler in 1881. Asbury Park is an Atlantic beachfront community in Monmouth County. It was developed in 1871 by New York manufacturer James A. Bradley as a resort town. Bradley built a boardwalk with pier and an orchestra pavilion. He laid out streets and illuminated them with electric lighting. The seaside destination was serviced by the New York and Long Branch Railroad and quickly attracted vacationers, businessmen and home-seekers. Several luxury hotels lined the beachfront. The mile and a quarter of oceanfront enticed more than 600,000 visitors annually. The area offered excellent boating and fishing at nearby Deal, Sunset and Wesley Lakes and summertime music concerts that used the Atlantic Ocean for a backdrop. At the bottom of this publication a town booster reads:
"The growth of this popular seaside summer resort is unparalleled. There are now over 600 buildings, including hotels. In 1869 it was a wilderness and a barren sand-waste, assessed at only $15,000. In 1880 it was assessed at nearly $1,000,000."
