Description

Aeroview of Margate City, New Jersey 1925.

This reproduction panoramic view map of Margate City, Atlantic County, New Jersey was drawn by Rene Cinquin and published by Hughes & Cinquin in 1925. Margate City was established on Absecon Island just south of Atlantic City. Its original moniker was "South Atlantic City". In 1909 the city was re-incorporated with the name Margate City. It was a popular vacation town for tourists along the Atlantic coastline. The map from 1925 clearly indicates the city's most famous structure "Lucy the Elephant". It was designed and built by James V. Lafferty in 1882 along the boardwalk. Lafferty's 65 foot tall "Elephant Bazaar" was the first of his U. S. Patented animal-shaped buildings and the only one that still stands today. Constructed of wood and tin sheeting, the novelty structure was used to elevate real estate sales and promote tourism.

The map shows Margate City buildings, clearly labeled streets, and beach of 1925. The border illustrations are of:

City Hall.
Public School.
Distance Table to Neighboring Communities.
