Description

City of Newark, N.J. / Parsons & Atwater, del.

Reproduction panoramic view map of the City of Newark, New Jersey drawn and published by Parsons & Atwater in 1874. Newark was originally founded along the Passaic River in 1666 by Puritans from the New Haven Colony. The completion of the Morris Canal in 1831 enabled Newark to prosper greatly through the transportation of goods. Railroads followed, and by 1874 the City of Newark was a major hub for trade in and out of town. Several ornate churches, some with towering spires, dot the city's skyline. Local manufacturers of Newark were known for their excellent brewing of beer and ale and their making of fine leather goods.

The map from 1874 shows streets, buildings, bridges, shipping traffic and railroad lines.
