Description

Paterson, N.J. / Packard & Butler Lith. Philadelphia.

Reproduction map of Paterson, New Jersey drawn and published by Packard & Butler in 1880. Paterson was established in 1851 along the Passaic River. The river's 77 foot falls was harnessed with the encouragement of the Society for the Establishment of Useful Manufactures or S. U. M. The S. U. M. organization was founded after the American Revolution to achieve economic independence over British manufacturers. The S. U. M. founded Paterson at the falls and named the community after former New Jersey Governor and signer of the Declaration of Independence, William Paterson. The newly created water-power source provided energy for several industries that emerged in Paterson including so many silk producing mills the town was nicknamed Silk City.

In 1832, Thomas Rogers founded, with partners Morris Ketchum and Jasper Grosvenor, the famed Rogers Locomotive Works in Paterson. Rogers son Jacob S. Rogers headed the firm in the 1850's when it built its most famous locomotive called The General. This product was a valued article during the American Civil War. Rogers Locomotive Works produced over six thousand steam locomotives for various uses world-wide.

The illustrated map from 1880 includes streets, buildings, railroad lines and canal.
