Description

Amsterdam & Port Jackson, N.Y. / drawn & pub. by H.H. Rowley & Co.

Reproduction bird's-eye view of Amsterdam and Port Jackson, New York, drawn and published by H. H. Rowley & Co. in 1881. Amsterdam, a cliff-side community along the Mohawk River was incorporated as a village in 1832. The village prospered with the Erie Canal following the river on the Port Jackson side and later with the railroads. Raw materials were inexpensively shipped here and in 1875, when the dam was completed on the nearby Chuctanunda Creek, several manufacturers established factories that would use the creek's water power to produce knit ware and carpets, as well as linseed oil, pearl buttons, brooms and iron ware. Products from Amsterdam were then shipped throughout the world. Four years after the publishing of this map Amsterdam would acquire city status and would annex Port Jackson.

The map from 1881 features clearly labeled street names showing railroad and canal traffic.
