Canajoharie & Palatine Bridge, N.Y., 1881 / C.H. Vogt, Cleveland, O.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Canajoharie and Palatine Bridge, New York, drawn and published by C. H. Vogt in 1881. Canajoharie, along the Mohawk River in Montgomery County, was a trade village to the Mohawk Indian nation, that was ceded over to New York after the American Revolutionary War. Just across the river is Palatine Bridge, settled in 1723. In 1798 the bridge was built between the two towns. The Erie Canal was constructed at the north end of Canajoharie. Palatine Bridge was home to Webster Wagner, local postmaster, politician and inventor of railway sleeping and palace cars. Susan B. Anthony taught at the Canajoharie Academy beginning in 1846, where she became headmistress of the Female Department.
