Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Fishkill, New York, drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1886. The village of Fishkill in Dutchess County was a small mill and ferry community that played an important role in the American Revolution when the Continental army set up a supply depot nearby. Fishkill's Dutch Reformed Church was used as a military prison. In 1777, the first copies of New York State's Constitution were printed on Samuel Loudon's press in Fishkill. The 1800s brought several manufacturers to the area and Fishkill became known particularly for its woolen products. The local economy declined after the American Civil War when a depression closed many mills.
