Description

Glens Falls, N.Y. Published & drawn by L. R. Burleigh. Beck & Pauli, litho.

Reproduction panoramic map of Glens Falls, New York, drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1884. Glens Falls is located in Warren County along the Hudson River near its falls. It was named after Colonel Johannes Glen of Schenectady and was originally settled by Quakers. The town was burned twice during the American Revolution forcing the Quakers to abandon it, and return at the war's end. A post office was established in Glens Falls in 1808. In the 1820's a feeder canal was created linking the town to the Champlain Canal. The feeder canal made it possible to ship lime, marble and lumber directly from the docks at the base of Canal Street. The town suffered a major setback in 1864 when a devastating fire destroyed most of the town's central business district and another blaze threatened Glens Falls in the year of this map's publishing.

The map from 1884 features clearly labeled street names.
