Description

Greene, N.Y. / published by L. R. Burleigh.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Greene, New York drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1890. The land where Greene stands along the Chenango River was purchased from the Oneida and Tuscarora Indians in 1785. The village was platted in 1806. Farms were established in the rich bottom lands of the river and the construction of the Catskill-Ithaca and Susquehanna-Bath Turnpikes sustained the community's economy. With the Chenango Canal linking Greene with other towns in 1837, and later with the railroads, the town's commerce prospered greatly.

The map from 1890 shows railway line and includes clearly labeled street names.
