Reproduction antique map of Monroe, New York, published by Hughes & Bailey in 1922. The village of Monroe, located in Orange County, was named for President James Monroe and was mainly a farming community. In 1891 Monroe's Emil Frey with the Monroe Cheese Co. created his famous Liederkranz cheese and experimented further to create Velveeta cheese in the year of this map's publishing. Monroe's city booster from 1923 reads:

 "Monroe, "Queen of the Lake Region" of famed Orange County, is a thriving village nearby several of the most beautiful lakes of the Empire State.

  It is also rich in superb mountain scenery, with splendid views on all sides and is in easy reach of the world renowned Hudson river.

  Population about 2000. Incorporated 1894. Area nearly 18 sq. m. Elevation 800 ft. above sea level. On main line of Erie R. R. fifty miles from New York City. Twenty passenger trains daily. Educational advantages of highest order. New $60,000 High School Building. Free Public Library. Fraternal, social and religious organizations, active and fully represented.

  Citizens Bank of Monroe. National Bank. Building and Loan Association. Board of Trade. Excellent power and light system by its own ideal plant. Fine water works with 340 acre reservoir. Ample fir and police protection. Live weekly newspaper, The Monroe Gazette. New $40,000 Colonial Theatre. Well stocked stores with up-to-date best goods.

  As a summer resort Monroe's attractions and situations are ideal, the many lakes providing best camping facilities, and for all the year residence its easy accessibility and charming locations have induced scores of noted people of New York to have their homes here.
