Description

New York / painted by Heine, J. Kummer & Döpler; engraved by Himely.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of New York, New York, painted by J. Kummer Heine & Döpler and published by Goupil & Co. in 1851. The map looks at New York from where the Hudson River meets the East River, showing Battery Park in the foreground. In 1851, journalist Henry Jarvis Raymond and banker George Jones founded "The New York Times" as the "New-York Daily Times" in New York. This panoramic illustrated map from 1851 shows buildings and trade ship traffic. The map shows evidence of wear and water damage in the lower margin, but the dramatic black & white effect of the map is not lost.
