Historic Map - New York City, NY - 1865
Description
Bird's eye view of New York and environs. J. Bachmann, del.
This beautifully colored reproduction bird's-eye view map of New York, New York was drawn by John Bachmann and published by Kimmel & Forster in 1865. The map looks at New York at the end of the American Civil War from where the Hudson River meets the East River, showing Battery Park in the foreground.
The city is pictured two years after the notorious "New York Draft Riots" claimed more than one-hundred lives and cost a million dollars to remedy. The "Draft Riots" were spread over a week in the summer of 1863, with violence erupting as working class men protested the inequality of new laws passed by Congress that allowed wealthier men to avoid the draft by paying a $300 Commutation Fee. President Abraham Lincoln was forced to send troops to quell the violence.
The year that this map was published saw the end of the Civil War. On April 9, 1865, the cannon fire and explosions heard in the city were those of celebration. Within one week, the city received news that President Lincoln was assassinated and the city was shaken by the sad news. A half million New Yorkers lined the route to pay their respects when the President's funeral cortege arrived on April 24th.
