Description

The city of New York.

This reproduction bird's-eye view map of New York, New York, published by Currier & Ives in 1870 provides a colorful look at New York just five years after the American Civil War ended. In the foreground is Battery Park and at the right Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Bridge is illustrated, but was only projected at the time. The bridge wouldn't be complete for another thirteen years.

This map captures the city as it appeared the year following the stock market collapse, known as "Black Friday", September 25, 1869, an event that ruined many businesses and investors and plunged the country into a severe depression.

Alfred Ely Beach, co-publisher of the "New York Sun" invented a pneumatic subway that was tested in 1870 on 100 yards of track in a tunnel below Broadway, between Warren and Murray Streets. Despite its promise, the project was delayed for decades due to manipulation by Boss Tweed, who's investment interests in transportation ran counter to the support of the subway.

This beautifully colored panoramic map from 1870 notes the steamers the "City of New York" and the "Bristol". It shows buildings and shipping traffic.
