Description

The city of New York.

This reproduction bird's-eye view map of the City of New York was drawn by Parsons & Atwater and published by Currier & Ives in 1886. It provides a look at New York and vicinity in the year that the Statue of Liberty was dedicated. Frédéric Bartholdi designed the statue representing "Libertas", the Roman goddess of freedom. The statue was constructed in France and shipped overseas in parts that were assembled on a pedestal on New York's Bedloe's Island. The dedication was presided over by President Cleveland and marked with New York's first ticker-tape parade. The island is now called Liberty Island and the neoclassical sculpture remains a symbol of American freedom.

This detailed panoramic map from 1886 includes detailed illustrations of the steamers the "Massachusetts" and the "Providence" offshore. It shows buildings and shipping traffic.
