Description

Gracie Emmett in her great play the Pulse of New York. By Howard P. Taylor. Courier Lith. Co.

This reproduction panoramic view of New York City and vicinity was drawn for vaudeville comedienne Gracie Emmett's great play "Pulse of New York" featured in 1891. It provides a look at New York seven years before its consolidation of the five boroughs.

This map was published the same year that Herman Melville, author of "Moby Dick", among other celebrated works, died. A native of New York City, Melville was born near State Street on the Battery and moved to the area around Madison Square where he lived more than three decades.

Carnegie Hall opened on May 5, 1891, with Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
