Description

Philmont, N.Y. : 1881.

This reproduction bird's-eye view map of Philmont, New York was published in 1881. The village of Philmont is located in Columbia County along the Ockawamick Creek. George Philip was the first to harness the fast moving waters of the creek to power his mill in 1845. Several other mills and manufacturers established firms nearby and the Harlem Railroad began serving the village in the 1850's. The trains shipped textile goods, animals (on the hoof), produce and milk to New York City and places beyond. There were so many woolen mills in Philmont that it was popularly referred to as "Factory Hill" and it prospered greatly during the American Civil War due particularly to its wool products.
