Description

Rome, N.Y. Published & drawn by L. R. Burleigh. Beck & Pauli, litho.

This reproduction bird's-eye view map of Rome, New York was published by the Burleigh Litho. Co. around 1886. Rome is a city in Oneida County on the banks of the Mohawk River. A former Revolutionary War fort town, Rome prospered greatly when in 1817 construction of the Erie Canal began there. The Rome Academy opened its doors in 1835 and began turning out students such as Baptist minister Francis Bellamy who wrote our nation's "Pledge of Allegiance". With trade and transportation Rome would continue to build throughout the 1800s. The R. W. & O. R. R. Co. had a large locomotive works in town and the Rome Iron Works turned out about 10,000 tons of iron rail annually.

This panoramic map from the late1800s shows buildings, bridges, clearly labeled streets and railroad routes.
