New York State’s advancements in transportation have been significant beginning in the early 1800's with the addition of the first steamboat line.
Buffalo, located on the eastern shores of Lake Erie near the head of the Niagara River, was a small trading community before the Erie Canal opened with Buffalo at its western terminus. The Erie Canal opened in 1825.
The canal enabled Buffalo to prosper and grow into a major port city and manufacturing center.
Railroads closely followed the canals. Numerous railroads were added in New York State during the mid-1800's. These new lines cut the costs of transporting goods dramatically. Farmers and manufacturers were now able to transport goods more efficiently, and at less cost.
Railroads also opened up the beautiful scenery of western and upper New York to vacationers during this period. A number of railroad lines were added during the mid-1800's to reach the western and upper regions of the state to access connections into Pennsylvania and Canada.
In 1866 the New York & Oswego Midland Railroad was organized to build a standard gauge railroad line between Oswego, located on Lake Ontario, and New York City. The line opened between Oswego and Norwich in 1869. The route was later finished using leased lines, but went bankrupt just after its full completion in 1873.
Several railroad lines were built to transport anthracite coal from the mines in Pennsylvania to the industrial areas in New York and elsewhere during this time period.
