Description

Map of New York City, Brooklyn, and vicinity showing surface and elevated railroads in operation and proposed.

The Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883, linking Brooklyn with Manhattan. In 1898, Brooklyn was designated as one of New York City's five boroughs.

This map provides a look at New York City and vicinity in the year before the Statue of Liberty was dedicated. Frédéric Bartholdi designed the statue representing "Libertas", the Roman goddess of freedom. The statue was constructed in France and shipped overseas in parts that were assembled on a pedestal on New York Harbor’s Bedloe’s Island.

The island is now called Liberty Island and the neoclassical sculpted “Mother of Exiles” remains a symbol of American freedom.

This detailed map of New York City, Brooklyn, Williamsburgh, Jersey City and vicinity was published in 1885 by G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co. It displays relief, drainage, parks, various buildings, names of property owners, streets and roads. Railroads are distinguished by line symbols.
