Description

Richfield Springs, N.Y. Published & drawn by L. R. Burleigh. C.H. Vogt & Son, lith.

This reproduction bird's-eye view map of Richfield Springs, New York was drawn and published by L. R. Burleigh in 1885. Richfield Springs is a village in Otsego County at the north end of Canadarago Lake. Its local sulfur springs and spectacular views made it a popular resort town. Several New Yorkers had fine cottages with sumptuous gardens designed and built here in the 1800's. The original spring was described to visitors at the time thusly, "At the summit of a gently-rising eminence in the mist of shrubbery, and overshadowed by the lofty and majestic branches of the fir and pine, there issued forth from beneath the roots of a gigantic tree a crystal mineral fountain of life and health".

The map from 1885 shows railroad route, buildings and clearly labeled streets.
