A picturesque area full of waterfalls and glens, Schaghticoke prospered during the 1800's with several cotton and woolen mills that were erected along the fast moving waters of the Tomhannock Creek. In 1889 the Schaghticoke Woolen Manufacturing Company under the management of proprietor Stephen W. Barker employed over 350 operators and produced nearly five hundred thousand yards of worsted, cashmeres and other woolen goods annually.
