A classic bird's-eye view map of Stamford, New York, published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1890. This picturesque village in the Catskill Mountains had long been a traveler's destination, but with the addition in 1872 of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad from Kingston, the area began to fill with tourists. Stamford's most prominent citizen of the 1800s was Dr. Stephen E. Churchill who built a grand hotel. He also promoted the local tourist industry and helped create Churchill Park, an area full of summer mansions. Churchill had been a teacher, then principle at the Stamford Seminary before acquiring his degree and becoming the town's medical physician. Dr. Churchill converted the old seminary buildings into the hotel Churchill Hall. Five years after this map's publishing Churchill would purchase farmland surrounding the seminary and turn it into viewable countryside with two small lakes. He would later build the grand "Rexmere" hotel on the site where the seminary is shown on this map. The spectacular hotel of Second Empire Revival style was five-stories high and accommodated 400 guests.
