Description

Bird's eye view of Syracuse, N.Y. Designed & drawn by J. C. Laass, civ. eng. & L. Laass, architect. Lithographed & printed by E. Sachse & Co.

This reproduction antique map of Syracuse, New York was designed and drawn by civil engineer J. C. Laass and architect L. Laass in 1868. Syracuse is county seat to Onondaga County at the northeast corner of the Finger Lakes Region. Its vast deposits of salt and limestone were important resources in the early days. Following the War of 1812, foreign importation of salt had become difficult. Syracuse's large reserves of salt would supply most of the U. S. salt needs for the remainder of the century. The arrival of the Erie Canal followed by the railroads made transportation of salt and limestone easier and cheaper for Syracuse. The New York Central Railroad laid its tracks along the right of way once used for the Erie Canal towpath. The company located its station between West Fayette and West Washington Street, west of Franklin Street. Washington Street's name was changed to Railroad Street. The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad along with the New York Central ran trains throughout Syracuse's downtown streets until being elevated in 1936. As the Civil War ended, the salt industry began to fade in Syracuse, but many new industries were beginning to take shape including Syracuse's valuable dairy industry.

This detailed bird's-eye view map from 1868 shows lively carriage and pedestrian street scenes, railway and streetcar routes and clearly labeled streets. It features illustrations of the following buildings:

Residence of Mr. B. W. Baum

Syracuse Mills, Barker, Townsend & Co.

Greenways Brewery & Malthouse

Residence of Mr. A. C. Yeates

Pike Block
