Description

Troy, N.Y. 1881.

This reproduction bird's-eye view map of Troy, New York was published in 1881 by Beck & Pauli. Troy is county seat to Rensselaer County along the Hudson River. During the War of 1812, Troy was responsible for the shipment of supplies to the militia and regular army forces. It is said that Troy butcher Samuel Wilson labeled provision barrels with the initials U. S. and troops took it to stand for "Uncle Sam". Some say the phrase Uncle Sam was coined here. Troy maintained as a transportation center for meats and vegetables from Vermont being shipped down the Hudson River to New York City. When the Erie Canal was completed with its eastern terminus just across the Hudson from Troy, cargo shipments increased greatly.

The men's fashion trend of wearing shirt collars and cuffs separately began in Troy with an idea in 1825 by a blacksmith's wife Hannah Lord Montague of cutting off her husbands collars and cuffs to clean and starch them separately. Troy's shirt manufacturers began producing collars and cuffs and the popularity of these accessories was reflected in American men's fashion for some time. Troy housed so many shirt and shirtwaist manufacturers it became known as "Collar City". The making of steel was also an important product in Troy in its early days before its manufacture was moved closer to its resources. Much of the town's architecture was constructed using steel.

This aero-view map from 1881 shows buildings, clearly labeled streets, canal and railroad route.
