This reproduction bird's-eye view map of Valley Falls, New York was published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1887. It portrays Valley Falls just after the Valley Falls Water Power Co. built their new dam on the Hoosic River. The community of Valley Falls, with its quaint covered bridge over the river, was dependent on the textile mills that were powered by the river's flow. Most residents worked at the mills or the mill's supporting businesses. The linen mill of James Thompson manufactured flax and hemp twines, mosquito netting, tarlatans and buckram. In 1886 Thompson's firm made extensive excavations and erected its new flume and in 1887, demolished several of the old buildings that had been operated by Lape & Sprout and built a larger brick structure. Valley Falls also had a fine vineyard nearby.
