Description

Aero-view of Valley Stream, Long Island 1924.

This reproduction aero-view map of Valley Stream, New York was drawn by Rene Cinquin and published by Hughes & Cinquin in 1924. The map provides a view of Valley Stream on Long Island just one year before being incorporated as a village. Lively nightclubs, a popular golf course and the nearby beaches lured visitors to the area. In 1922, developer William R. Gibson bought 500 acres of land along Roosevelt Avenue and began platting and developing Avondale, Berkeley, Cambridge, Derby and Elmwood Streets. Later in the 1920's, Gibson would petition for and be awarded the town's own railroad station. The Valley Stream booster from 1924 reads:

"Valley Stream is a beautiful, healthful and fast growing Long Island town of great promise, and with many attractions and advantages.

Best train service of any place on Long Island except Jamaica, over 100 trains daily.

Educational facilities of highest order and excellence.

Fire and Police protection best and thoroughly efficient.

Water, Gas and Electrical equipment ample, affording excellent service.

Street improvements of exceptional quality, extent and condition.

Local stores fully supplied with latest and best goods.

Fraternal, Social and Religious interests active thru many organizations.

Valley Stream offers the home seeker and the business man unsurpassed inducements to locate here and enjoy its countless benefits and increasing prosperity."
