Description

Warsaw, N.Y. Published & drawn by L. R. Burleigh. Beck & Pauli, litho.

This reproduction antique view map of Warsaw, New York was drawn and published by L. R. Burleigh in 1885. Warsaw, county seat for Wyoming County, was settled in the early 1800's as a milling and farming community along Oatka Creek. The Erie Canal was opened here in 1835. With the addition of two railroad services in the mid-1800's, manufacturers were lured to the area with its swift moving creek.

A fire in 1867 destroyed all the stores on the west side of Main Street from Buffalo to Genesee Streets. Artificial gas began illuminating town streets 1871 and Warsaw's Fire Hall was built the following year. The town erected their Wyoming County Civil War Monument at the intersection of Court and Main Streets in 1877. Salt production dominated Warsaw's industry in the 1880's. In 1882 when the town telephone exchange opened there were twelve subscribers.

Warsaw was the quiet retirement place of the Honorable Seth M. Gates, the two term member of congress who had suffered two paralytic strokes. He was advised by physicians to leave public office and settled here with his family in 1844. Gates had been an outspoken antislavery Whig while in congress and had helped John Quincy Adams and others to secure the passage of the bill guaranteeing the right of petition.

The panoramic map from 1885 features an inset illustration of The Warsaw Salt Co. Works. It shows buildings, railroad routes and clearly labeled streets.
