Description

Walden, Orange County, N.Y. 1887. Drawn & published by L. R. Burleigh. Burleigh Litho. Establishment.

This bird's-eye view map of Walden, New York was published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1887. The village of Walden, along the Wallkill River in Orange County, began as a mill town with the arrival of New York shipping magnate Jacob Walden, who was responsible for the damming of the river above Wallkill Falls and the building of the woolen mills. Other mills moved into the area, and the village remained known as Walden's Mills until its incorporation in 1855 as Walden. The community grew around the mills and their manufacture of everything from ladies' undergarments to overalls. Engines of all sorts were also manufactured in Walden in the 1800s and the town became a renown knife making center in the late 1800s. It was knives that put Walden on the map when the New York Knife Co. acquired the contract to provide the Union Army with cutlery during the American Civil War. Several other knife manufacturers moved to the village during this era and Walden became known as "Knifetown". Later the knife industry in Walden would be greatly diminished when lowered tariffs would allow imported knives to be sold less expensively.

This panoramic map of Walden from 1887 shows buildings, clearly labeled streets and railroad route.
