This bird's-eye view map of Whitesboro, New York was published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1891. Whitesboro is a village in Oneida County along the Sauquoit Creek. The village was named after early settler Hugh White and incorporated in 1813. White's grandson, civil engineer Canvass White, invented a hydraulic cement that hardened under water. White became chief lock designer for the Erie Canal project and his cement was used extensively in its construction. The canal bordered Whitesboro and manufacturers found this waterway ideal for transporting their products to outside communities. Whitesboro contained a canal Way Station, where barge masters could get a fresh team of horses. Barges would often tie up for the night just outside the Central Hotel.
Farming in the area was a busy industry, as beans and other vegetables were grown in the area and canned at the local cannery. The Anchor Knitting Mills produced knit underwear. The B. T. Babbit Iron Works manufactured fire engines, brush trimmers, railroad car ventilators and other mechanical instruments.
