Description

Ashtabula Harbor, Ohio 1896. Drawn by T. M. Fowler.

Reproduction panoramic map of the community known as Ashtabula Harbor, OH, drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1896. Founded in 1803, Ashtabula was incorporated in 1891. Ashtabula, at the mouth of the Ashtabula River where it meets Lake Erie has a substantial harbor, making it an important port town throughout the 1800s. In the years leading to the American Civil War, Ashtabula was the site of several stops on the Underground Railroad, at which African-American slaves could continue their way to freedom in Canada. On December 29, 1876, Ashtabula suffered a great tragedy when the railway bridge over the Ashtabula River collapsed casting a locomotive and passenger cars 150 feet below into the frozen waters. In all 92 people were killed and 64 injured. By 1896 Ashtabula Harbor was bustling as a large ore and coal port.
