Description

Birds eye view of Columbus, Ohio / drawn by H.H. & O.H. Bailey.

Panoramic reproduction view of the city of Columbus, Ohio drawn by H. H. & O. H. Bailey and published by Fowler & Bailey in 1872. Now the capital of Ohio, Columbus was founded close to a Native American burial mound near the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers. In 1850, the Columbus and Xenia Railroad reached the city and the next year the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati Railroad arrived. The two railroads shared the Union Station built on the east side of High Street north of North Public Lane. The Ohio Statehouse opened in 1857. During the American Civil War, Columbus was a major base for the volunteer Union Army at Camp Chase which was located in what is now the Hilltop neighborhood of west Columbus. The camp housed, organized and trained the 18th U. S. Infantry. The Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, which became Ohio State University was founded in 1870.
