Description

View of Charleroi, Washington County, P.A., 1897 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This reproduction view of Charleroi, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1897. Charleroi was established along the Monongahela River in 1890. With the natural resources of the region Charleroi soon developed into an industrial town, especially with its number of glass factories. Many fine glassmaking craftspeople moved here from the great Belgian glassmaking city of the same name. Charleroi blossomed with this industry. The famed Corning Glass brand operated a factory in Charleroi in the 1890's. The discovery of oil and natural gas also brought great prosperity to the community.

The panoramic map from 1897 depicts Charlerois labeled streets and railroad lines. Included are buildings and scenes of community life.
